Hypnotherapy can be helpful in many conditions.
Hypnosis (the Greek word for sleep) is widely accepted as an excellent method by which patients may access their inner potential by addressing their subconscious mind while in a relaxed state. This calming and powerful tool enlists the power of the persons own imagination and may utilize a wide range of techniques from storytelling, metaphor, direct suggestion or symbolism toward a beneficial change. It is an experience that is similar to when you drift off to sleep, not fully asleep, but also not fully awake. It is generally considered helpful if the client is personally motivated to change. Disregard your assumptions of what you think it feels like to be hypnotized. Often, if any individual has observed stage hypnosis, it can become confusing when experiencing hypnosis in a private setting. Stage hypnosis is completely different from clinical hypnosis. Stage hypnosis works well on very few people and the suggestions are strictly for entertainment purposes.
Hypnotherapy has been proven helpful with the following conditions:
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Stress, anxiety, and panic
- Unwanted habits and addictions (smoking, overeating, alcoholism, drug abuse)
- Lack of confidence and low self-esteem
- Fear of examinations and public speaking
- Weight loss
Hypnotherapy can be helpful in many conditions however, there are instances in which it may be contraindicated.
These could include some manifestations of depressive illness, epilepsy, psychosis (e.g. schizophrenia) and some breathing problems. Hypnotherapy can be an adjunct to but is not a replacement for counseling or the mental health care provided by a psychologist or psychiatrist. A great metaphor for hypnosis is, “What a shower is to the body, hypnosis is to the mind.” Hypnosis cleans what is in our subconscious mind that has been contaminated for many years by life and conditioning. It not only reconditions the mind, it cleans the mind of past, unwanted behavior so that you can accomplish your goal.
The first visit
Some participants of hypnosis, upon completion of their first session, feel that they have not been hypnotized at all, yet they have achieved at least a light level of hypnosis. Remember, you are here to achieve your personal goals, not evaluate whether or not you have been hypnotized. If you try to evaluate what you feel when you are leaving without logic or doubt, you will feel a sensation of relief as though you can accomplish you goal. Just allow the hypnosis to take hold!
