Intravenous Nutritional Therapy is a way of providing nutrients directly into the bloodstream. This is helpful because the process bypasses the GI tract and goes directly into circulation to be used in the body. IV therapy can create therapeutic blood levels of certain nutrients.
Why do people need nutritional intravenous therapy? What are some of the conditions that respond well to IV therapy?
Gastric bypass (surgical weight loss surgery) and GI Tract damage
Many times people who have had gastric bypass have difficulty absorbing nutrients through the gastrointestinal tract (stomach and intestine) other time the GI tract is damaged by pathogens (virus, bacteria, and toxic exposures). Other conditions that can affect absorption are hydrochloric acid or digestive enzymes deficiency, lack of friendly gut bacteria that aid digestion.
The damage or deficiency makes it nearly impossible for the patient to absorb therapeutic dose of nutrients or medications. This is the main reason IV therapy is so effective: the nutrients bypass the GI tract, and entire right into the blood stream where they can be shuttled directly to where they are needed-the cells.
An example of this is High Dose Vitamin C. Many studies and clinical data show that high doses of Vitamin C stimulate the immune system and can fight cancer. But the GI tract usually cannot tolerate more than 10-40 grams per day. So it only makes sense to offer High Dose Vitamin C by IV infusion.
Metabolism: another reason IV therapy is so useful is because many times we may consume nutrients, either in food or supplement, and they are not in their active form or metabolite. Our bodies are supposed to activate the nutrients. But in the case of disease, or genetic variable, our bodies may not convert those nutrients into the active metabolite. Using IV therapy, the active metabolites are delivered directly to the cells without the body having to use energy to activate them.
Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTTS)
In the case of POTTS (Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) it is important to keep adequate hydration but it can be difficult because it increases the blood volume and sodium then needs to be increased. This is usually accomplished with salt tablets but often time’s people cannot obtain this level of saturation and IV NACL can be helpful.
Immune deficiency disorders
IV therapy can be provided for patients with an immune deficiency. This can be provided in the form of IVIG for children and adults.
Chelation therapy is used as a means of purging toxic metals and minerals from the body.

Does IV therapy hurt? What is the procedure like? How long does it take?
Although you will have a needle in your arm for the duration of your IV infusion, the procedure is relatively painless. The procedure is performed in office while you are resting in a comfortable chair. IV infusion can take between 30 mins-6 hours depending on your individual needs.
