ADHD Disorders and ADD

ADHD & ADD

Helthcare transition from pediatric to adult care

ADHD disorders are brain connected disorders that cause a variety of issues for children and adults. The symptoms range in severity from mild to severe. Conventional medicine treats these disorders with medical management and behavioral therapy. At our functional medicine clinic near Milwaukee, we take a different approach – we treat the whole child with biomedical treatment to help us discover any underlying medical issues.

Our functional approach to ADHD, also known as ADD, includes biomedical treatment, nutritional therapy and other alternative treatment.

There are three types of ADHD disorders

In the past, people referred to ADHD disorders as either ADD, or attention deficit disorder, and ADHD, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5) now defines three types of ADHD disorders.

  • Inattentive only—formerly referred to as ADD. This is the most common form of ADHD in females.
  • Hyperactive/impulsive—the least common type of the ADHD disorders. When a child has this type, they are able to pay attention, but exhibit hyperactive and impulsive behaviors. This disorder frequently occurs in young children.
  • Combined inattentive/hyperactive/impulsive—the type of disorder formerly called ADHD. With this disorder, a child will exhibit several behaviors.

Children with ADHD disorders exhibit several behaviors, including difficulty paying attention; problems interacting with peers and family members; learning problems; impulsive acts that can be dangerous; and the need for constant motion.

Our biomedical treatment and functional approach

Greg Brown, M.D., is a board-certified internist who began practicing integrative medicine in 2008, combining conventional medicine with a functional medicine approach. Dr. Brown employs biomedical treatment to help children with ADHD disorders. A biomedical treatment approach diagnoses and treats underlying medical issues that can affect children with ADHD disorders.

No one knows exactly what causes autism, but researchers are looking at four areas that they believe impact ADHD disorders.

Gastrointestinal problems – Problems we see include diarrhea, constipation, bloating, reflux and more. These problems can be caused by yeast, “leaky gut,” or other medical issues.

Nutritional imbalances and deficiencies – A child may be underweight or overweight, show signs of malnutrition or specific deficiencies. We address nutritional issues associated with ADHD disorders with special diet recommendations and nutritional supplements known as amino acid therapy, which assists in balancing the chemicals that cause ADHD/ADD symptoms.

Immune dysfunctions – These dysfunctions can be caused by genetics or environmental issues. The child may have rashes or other skin problems, bowel problems, fevers or other health issues due to immune problems. We uncover these issues, often ignored by conventional medicine

Detoxification irregularities – Toxins are almost always ignored by conventional medicine, but toxins can build up and cause neurological problems. We test for the presence of toxins when doing a biomedical workup on children with ADHD disorders.

If the conventional medicine approach to ADHD isn’t offering what you want for your child, contact us at our Functional Medicine Clinic near Milwaukee or call to schedule a consultation at 262-522-8640.

Optimal Metabolic Health with Nutritional Support

Serenity Health Care Center offers various nutritional programs that are individualized to meet your needs.

Nutrition, nourishment, or aliment, is the supply of materials – food – required by organisms and cells to stay alive. In science and human medicine, nutrition is the science or practice of consuming and utilizing foods.

What is nutrition?

Nutrition is a molecular biology, biochemistry and genetics advance, nutrition has become more focused on the steps of biochemical sequences through which substances inside us and other living organisms are transformed from one form to another – metabolism and metabolic pathways.

Nutrition also focuses on how diseases, conditions and problems can be prevented or lessened with a healthy diet.

In addition, nutrition involves identifying how certain diseases, conditions or problems may be caused by dietary factors, such as poor diet (malnutrition), food allergies, metabolic diseases, etc.

A common place for nutritional medicine is in restoring proper cholesterol levels or blood sugar levels.

It is important to understand the genetic modification that has taken place in our food sources today along with the processed foods that make up a large part of our daily diet and how they affect our bodies and the diseases that we face today.

If you want to change your life with nutrition, call today (262) 522-8640 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Brown, Muth, or Konetzki.

Autism Care Program

Autism Care Program at Serenity Health Care Center

Autism Therapy in Milwaukee, WI

Autism Wellness & Family Support Program

Our program is not a treatment or cure for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition, and there is currently no medical cure. Our role is to provide education, wellness-focused support, and guidance to help families better understand biological and lifestyle factors that may influence general health and daily functioning.

Understanding Plasmalogens in General Health

Plasmalogens are a type of phospholipid found in cell membranes throughout the body, including the brain. Researchers continue to study their role in cell structure, antioxidant activity, and cellular communication.

Current scientific research has observed that plasmalogen levels may vary between individuals. Ongoing studies are exploring how these variations relate to overall neurological and cellular health. At Serenity Health Care Center, we do not use plasmalogens to diagnose or treat autism, but rather to support broader discussions around nutrition and wellness.

Mitochondrial Function and Cellular Energy

Mitochondria are responsible for producing cellular energy and play an important role in normal metabolic processes. Research literature has explored mitochondrial function in many populations, including individuals with neurodevelopmental differences.

Our program includes educational discussions and wellness assessments that look at general mitochondrial health as part of overall well-being. These services are not intended to treat autism or alter neurological development, but to help families understand how cellular energy relates to general health.

Educational Resources & Ongoing Research

Serenity Health Care Center provides access to educational content and discussions around emerging research topics, including:
  • Autism and general health considerations
  • Neurodevelopmental diversity and wellness
  • The microbiome and overall health
  • Nutritional science and cellular wellness
These materials are informational only and are not presented as medical advice or therapeutic recommendations for autism.

Wellness Assessments for Individualized Support

As part of our wellness-focused approach, families may choose to explore assessments that support a broader understanding of nutritional and biochemical patterns.

Available Wellness Assessments May Include:

1. Plasmalogen Analysis (ProdromeSCAN™)

Measures biomarkers related to lipid metabolism and cellular health for educational and wellness purposes.

2. Mitochondrial Function Overview

Provides insight into cellular energy pathways as part of general health exploration.

3. Nutritional & Biochemical Review

Supports conversations around dietary habits, nutrient intake, and lifestyle factors.

These assessments do not diagnose autism, predict outcomes, or guide autism treatment.

A young child slides down a playground slide while an adult with red hair stands behind, smiling and guiding the child.

  • Supportive Wellness Strategies

Yeast overgrowth

The effects of yeast overgrowth are wide-ranging. Yeast may cause chronic fatigue, recurrent yeast infections, abdominal bloating and indigestion, headaches and skin rashes, immune suppression and chemical sensitivity, depression, and joint pain.

A member of the fungus family, yeast can flourish in your body if your immune system is depressed or if the naturally occurring bacteria in your system are destroyed.

A leading cause of yeast overgrowth is the overuse of antibiotics, which destroys beneficial bacteria as well as the bad, allowing yeast to proliferate in the digestive tract and vagina.

Sadly, this is a problem that many mainstream physicians are completely unaware of. Instead of treating the underlying cause of their patients’ poor health, they treat the individual symptoms using antibiotics, antihistamines, antidepressants or anti-inflammatory medications.

This is a vicious cycle that is hard to break.

Treating Candidiasis to Restore Health

At Serenity Health Care Center, we use a three-pronged approach to treating yeast overgrowth:

Step 1Eliminate the existing yeast in the colon.

Step 2: Limit dietary sources of yeast.

Step 3: Restore the colon with beneficial bacteria.

Our treatment program for yeast overgrowth includes using medication and herbs to kill yeast, natural remedies to restore the normal bacteria, as well as dietary solutions to restore balance to your gastrointestinal system.

This treatment strengthens your immune system by lowering the yeast load on your system while lessening the risk of infection and the need for antibiotics.

If the immune system is weakened, you could develop an allergic reaction to Candida.

We will help identify this allergen and can treat it with sublingual immunotherapy, or “drop therapy”.

Types of Nutritional IV Therapy

Types of Nutritional IV Therapy

We offer nutritional IV therapy at our Serenity Health Care Center functional medicine clinic near Milwaukee.

A man sits in a recliner with a blood pressure cuff on his arm, smiling and talking while discussing different types of IV nutritional therapy. There is a pillow and blanket on the chair next to him.

Our nutritional IV therapies facilitate wellness through the speedy delivery of natural, restorative, healing ingredients. Intravenous injections of robust infusions comprising vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and amino acids bypass the stomach and liver and go directly into the bloodstream, achieving fast, powerful results.

Depending on the infusion mix you select, Serenity’s IV therapies will:

  • Increase your daily energy levels
  • Improve your digestion
  • Help prevent dehydration
  • Reduce cold and flu symptoms
  • Boost your immune system
  • Reduce inflammation

Why Should You Get Nutritional (Vitamin) IV Therapy?

At Serenity Health Care Center, we believe in helping our patients take responsibility for their health. We find that patients who manage their health are empowered to feel and be their best. Our IV therapies support the pursuit of health and wellbeing!

Nutritional IV therapy (sometimes called IV Vitamin Therapy) is about getting important healthy ingredients into the body with no barriers to absorption.

Vitamins delivered intravenously go right into the bloodstream for immediate and maximum absorption. Consider a Vitamin C delivery by IV. It achieves 50 times greater concentration in the blood over Vitamin C that is taken orally and must be processed in the stomach and liver before being dispatched into the bloodstream.

Nutritional IV therapy provides instant absorption and circulation of ingredients.

IV Therapy for Chronic Conditions & Disease

Do you struggle with chronic health issues? Our IV therapies benefit patients who live with diseases and ongoing conditions.

  • Cancer
  • Infection
  • Gut problems: Crohn’s Disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Celiac Disease, Leaky Gut Syndrome
  • Migraines
  • Asthma
  • Hypertension
  • Lyme Disease
  • Neuropathy
  • Stress
  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Epstein Barr Syndrome
  • Ulcerative Colitis
  • Flu
  • Candida
  • Poor Circulation
  • Heavy Metal Toxicity

Nutritional IV Therapy to Maintain Good Health

Do you feel great? Good. Let us help you maintain that state. Choose the infusion that promotes overall cleansing and the removal of toxins from your body. Prevention and immunity boosts are key to sustaining optimal health and wellbeing.

How Nutritional IV Therapy Works

Nutritional IV Therapy is the intravenous delivery of potent, healthful infusions. These infusions contain the building blocks for robust health, plus warrior agents that fight inflammation and disease.

All-natural ingredients include Vitamin C, Vitamin D, B Vitamins, Zinc, Glutathione, Magnesium, Folic Acid, Amino Acids, NAD (Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), and others.

Not all infusions are alike. We offer different cocktails that address the issues listed above, as well as infusions that go to work on:

mental fatigue, lack of focus, anxiety, depression, addictions, collagen deficiency, poor skin quality, headaches, tiredness, soreness, stress, sluggish metabolism, allergies, chemo side effects, body aches, malaise, exhaustion, and more

What Happens During an IV Therapy Session?

Before your nutritional IV therapy session, our professional Serenity staff will run bloodwork (if necessary) to make sure you are a candidate for this type of treatment. (See below for people who may not or should not get Nutritional IV therapy.) Additionally, we evaluate your health history and check your vital signs.

On the day of your therapy, we invite you to dress comfortably. We provide a pleasant, comfortable setting in which you may sit or recline and relax while receiving the IV infusion. You will find healthy snacks and refreshing drinks in the rooms.

Some patients choose to close their eyes and listen to music during their session. Others read, watch movies, or work on their devices. Your activities during the IV session are completely up to you.

One of our trained and experienced nurses administers the IV treatment. The infusion does not hurt. You may feel the initial small prick of the needle, and you may sense a slight weight in your arm as the ingredients begin to flow in. Other than those sensations, most patients feel nothing.

Depending on which infusion you have selected, its delivery lasts from 30 minutes to two hours. After the session, you are free to resume all your normal activities immediately.

Who Should Not Receive Nutritional IV Therapy?

Some people’s bodies cannot tolerate powerful vitamin infusions. These include:

  • Pregnant women
  • Frequent smokers
  • People who suffer from renal or cardiac dysfunction
  • Newly diagnosed cancer patients
  • People with certain genetic factors

Cooperate with Your IV Therapy for Optimal Health

At Serenity Health, we urge our patients to adopt a total lifestyle of selfcare, prevention, and beneficial habits. In conjunction with nutritional IV therapy, these practices facilitate optimal health and wellbeing.

We encourage our patients to:

  1. Drink six 8-ounce glasses of water per day
  2. Limit alcohol consumption (no more than 5 fluid ounces per night)
  3. Be aware of exposure to toxins in food and products; limit this
  4. Avoid processed and refined foods
  5. Avoid sugar as much as possible
  6. Boost consumption of high-quality saturated fats
  7. Move! (your body, that is)

Arthritis

Arthritis

For years, arthritis was considered an inherent part of the aging process and a signal to a patient that it’s time to slow down. But not so anymore. At Serenity Health Care Center, our team provides an anti-aging approach that assists with the inflammation that causes the pain. Recent research and clinical findings show that there is much more to life for arthritis patients than the traditional recommendation of bed rest and drug therapy.

What Is Arthritis?

The word “arthritis” means “joint inflammation” and is often used in reference to rheumatic diseases. Rheumatic diseases include more than 100 conditions, including gout, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and many more. Although arthritis often begins in middle age and is more frequent in the older generation, it can also start at a young age.

Arthritis causes pain, swelling, stiffness, and loss of function in the joints. Several features distinguish rheumatoid arthritis it from other kinds of arthritis:

  • Tender, warm, and swollen joints.
  • Fatigue, sometimes fever, and a general sense of not feeling well.
  • Pain and stiffness lasts for more than 30 minutes after a long rest.
  • The condition is symmetrical. If one hand is affected, the other one is, too.
  • The wrist and finger joints closest to the hand are most frequently affected. Neck, shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, ankle, and feet joints can also be affected.
  • The disease can last for years and can affect other parts of the body, not only the joints.

Arthritis is highly individual. Some people suffer from mild arthritis that lasts from a few months to a few years and then goes away. Mild or moderate arthritis have periods of worsening symptoms (flares) and periods of remissions, when the patient feels better.

People with severe arthritis feel pain most of the time. The pain lasts for many years and can cause serious joint damage and disability.

How is arthritis treated?

There’s no cure for arthritis, but there are treatments that can help you manage the condition:

Ultrasound therapy

PRP

Stem Cell Therapy

Biofeedback

The Endocrine System

What is the endocrine system?

The endocrine system is made up of glands that secrete chemicals called ‘hormones’ into the bloodstream or surrounding tissues. The endocrine system includes the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, adrenal glands, pancreas, ovaries and testes.

This complex system must work like a well-trained symphony, if any gland is out of balance our body does not function the way it should, and we feel it. The endocrine system is responsible for dealing with different events and stresses. When we are exposed to many stressors in a short period of time, often the endocrine system begins to slow down and cannot function at an optimal level.

What are some of the functions of the endocrine system?

The endocrine system plays a vital role in your overall health. Some of the roles of the endocrine system include:

  • Growth
  • Repair
  • Sexual reproduction
  • Digestion
  • Homeostasis (constant internal balance)

How do hormones work?

Hormones work like a lock and key system. Hormones are the key and the body organs or hormone receptors are the lock itself. If the hormones fit then a process will take place, but if for some reason the key or lock is malfunctioned the signals will be messed up, and an improper signal will occur.  The hormones can set off a cascade of other signalling pathways in the cell to cause an immediate or a delayed effect.

The endocrine system is a tightly regulated system that keeps the hormones at perfect levels. One way this is achieved is through ‘feedback loops’. The release of hormones is regulated by other hormones, proteins or neuronal signals.

Pediatric Care – Treating Children from Birth to 21

Integrative Pediatrics program director Greg Brown, MD & Nanette offers conventional medicine in addition to evidence-based complementary therapies to facilitate the natural healing process in children and teens. Integrative medicine’s natural and comprehensive approach can help young people feel better, perform better and thrive at their fullest potential. An integrative approach acts to enhance conventional pediatric care. Integrative medicine “integrates” conventional medicine with those complementary therapies for which there is high-quality scientific evidence of safety and effectiveness.

Dr. Brown works in concert with each child’s existing pediatrician to create an integrative health plan for each child or teen, and offers pediatric integrative medicine consults to parents interested in healing their children through both conventional and complementary therapies.

What Conditions We Treat

The Integrative Pediatrics program treats a wide range of medical conditions, including ADD/ADHD, Autism, allergies, asthma, behavioral and developmental concerns, digestive disturbances, cancer care support, emotional health, eating problems, chronic headache, sleep problems, weight management and more. Using a whole-child approach, Dr. Brown also works with families to optimize overall health for children and teens and minimize the risk factors for future health problems.

The program also offers comprehensive consultations to expectant parents. “We created a prenatal program to prevent the rising childhood illness, which involves a new approach to prenatal health,” said Dr. Muth. Dr. Brown, the medical director of the Serenity Health Care Center Pediatric Integrative Medical Center and a leader in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) research and treatment.

“As with all of our programs, it is led by a board-certified medical expert who also possesses intense training in the use and application of CAM therapies,” adds Dr. Muth owner of Serenity Health Care Center. As an integrative doctor practicing emergency medicine, Brown found himself becoming more curious about CAM therapies, after being introduced to the owner and founder of Arch Medical center over ten years ago.
