Ticks Carrying Lyme Disease

Study confirms: Ticks carrying Lyme disease found in Eastern U.S. National Parks

Our natural medicine clinic near Milwaukee specializes in the treatment of Lyme disease. It can be difficult to treat, especially if it isn’t diagnosed in its earlier stages. At Serenity Health Care Center, part of our mission is to inform people about the symptoms, treatment and prevention of Lyme disease, an under-diagnosed and under-treated disease. With this in mind, we want our patients to know about this important new study, published in the Journal of Medical Entomology.

This study is the first to confirm the presence of ticks carrying Lyme disease in this region

Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, and the National Park Service, NPS, collected ticks in nine national parks, including Acadia National Park, Gettysburg National Military Park and Shenandoah National Park. The study, published in the Journal of Medical Entomology, confirmed that there were ticks infected with the type of bacteria that causes Lyme disease present in all nine parks they studied.

Researchers encourage the public to take preventive steps to decrease their risk

Researchers note that the study reminds everyone to “…protect themselves and their loved ones from tick and other bites.” Here are suggestions on how to reduce the risk for Lyme disease.

  • Apply a repellant product that contains 20 to 30% DEET to all exposed skin and clothing.
  • In addition, apply products that contain permethrin to your clothing.
  • For those looking for a natural product Ticks-N-All is an essential oil that can be applied directly to the skin.
  • Stick to the center of the trails, and try not to lean or sit on bushes or logs.
  • Check your clothing, gear, pets and other items for ticks.
  • Within at least two hours after you leave the area, take a shower.
  • If possible, put the clothes you were wearing in a dryer, set on high, for ten minutes.

If you are experiencing symptoms of Lyme disease, contact us.

The earlier we can diagnose and treat the disease at our natural medicine clinic near Milwaukee, the better the treatment results. If you discover that you have the disease in its later stages, rest assured that our expertise and knowledge makes a great resource for people in all stages of Lyme disease.

Lyme Disease in Wisconsin

Lyme Disease In Wisconsin

Lyme disease in Wisconsin is a growing problem. When winters are warmer, the tick population increases, creating more risk. The Wisconsin Department of Health reports that there were 38,000 cases reported in the state between 1980 and 2015. We treat many people in our region for this disease at our functional medicine clinic near Milwaukee.

Lyme disease is transmitted to humans by infected black legged or deer ticks. The ticks get the disease from biting infected animals. Lyme disease in Wisconsin and the rest of the country is usually caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, a bacterial spirochete. In 2013, health department officials noted that a rare species of bacteria, Borrelia mayonii, was also causing some infections.

Diagnosing Lyme disease in Wisconsin is still difficult

Even though our state has one of the highest rates of Lyme disease, practitioners still have difficulty diagnosing Lyme disease in Wisconsin. The bacteria that invade humans after they have been bitten can affect the skin, muscles, joints, nervous system, cardiovascular system, ocular tissue, sinus tissue, gastrointestinal tract and lungs.

Lyme disease is known as the great mimicker, and practitioners who are not very familiar with the disease often make the wrong diagnosis. To further complicate things, the disease affects each person differently, leading to many missed diagnoses of Lyme disease in Wisconsin and across the country.

We specialize in Lyme disease diagnosis and treatment

Debra Muth, N.D., is one of the few Lyme literate practitioners in the state. She is an expert in this field and approaches Lyme disease from a functional medicine mindset, meaning she treats each individual as a whole person, not just a “case” or a set of symptoms.

Dr. Muth tests for Lyme disease using the more accurate Western blot test, instead of the conventional PCR testing favored by much of the conventional medicine community. She treats Lyme disease in Wisconsin with plans that are not available from a conventional medical doctor.

When a person is bitten by a tick that carries Lyme disease, they may also have coinfections. There are other diseases that the tick may carry, including:

  • Babesiosis
  • Anaplasmosis
  • Rocky Mountain spotted fever
  • Tularemia
  • Powassan virus

These coinfections must be addressed in addition to Lyme disease. Patients who are dealing with Lyme disease in Wisconsin need to find a Lyme literate practitioner who understands this devastating disease and is willing to work diligently to help them regain their health and quality of life.

Dr. Muth and the staff at our functional medicine clinic near Milwaukee treat patients from the Midwest and other parts of the country who have Lyme disease. Contact us today to get help.

A Tribute to Dr. John Gregory Hoffman, a Pioneer in Lyme Disease Treatment

Dr. Hoffman passed away on May 7, 2017. He was nationally recognized as a leader in the treatment of Lyme disease. Dr. Debra Muth, who offers specialized treatment for Lyme disease at her functional medicine clinic near Milwaukee, benefited from his time and knowledge about Lyme disease. Dr. Muth explains his legacy to the Lyme disease community:

“Dr. Hoffman was one of the founders of Lyme disease treatment in our area. He was an amazing doctor who went out of his way to care for as many patients as he could. He also went out of his way to educate practitioners who were interested in Lyme disease treatment. He was always willing to share knowledge and information and was very supportive and encouraging. Dr. Hoffman was all about treating the patient.”

Bio-Terrain Assessment Offers Personalized Therapy

Bio-Terrain assessment is used to understand the elements within an individual’s body chemistry. Instead of simply treating symptoms, Bio-Terrain assessments help reveal underlying causes of a patient’s illness. This leads to solutions to restore your overall health.

This non-invasive assessment offers personalized therapy for a variety of health issues. We’ve had success with a specialized program for chronically ill Lyme disease patients. Find out more about it at Personalized Bio Terrain Therapy for Lyme Disease.

Other chronic diseases that could potentially benefit from Bio-Terrain assessment are staph, strep, mycoplasma, Epstein Barr and bartonella.

Today, we use Bio-Terrain to define an individual’s biochemistry based upon blood, urine and saliva. The results allow us to personalize a treatment plan. It is pain-free, safe and appropriate for any age. Personalized Bio-Terrain therapy sessions require six visits within a 14-day timeframe. Patients see gradual improvement over a three-month timeframe. Treatment consists of:

  • Bio-magnetic pairing
  • Crania sacral work
  • Detoxification
  • Dietary recommendations
  • Ondamed treatment
  • Sacral Occipital Technique blocking

An unhealthy lifestyle, environmental toxins or chronic disease can all affect your terrain. When your terrain is out of balance, few if any treatments work well. Bio-Terrain assessment puts a stop to the endless cycle of chasing and treating symptoms. It gets to the root of the problem by determining the primary biological dysfunction(s) that need to be treated.

A 19th century physiologist, Claude Bernard, is credited with the original bio-terrain concept of a cell’s environment determining its function. After years of research, Dr. Robert Greenberg designed the assessment device in 1994. He continues to be recognized today as a leading authority on Bio-Terrain.

This assessment is a valuable tool in analyzing and monitoring the treatment progress or regression in chronic diseases. It’s a way that you can take control and get your health back on track.

If you, your child or other family member is struggling to manage a chronic disease, call Serenity Health Care at 262.522.8640 to find out if Bio-Terrain assessment has the potential to help you.

Lyme Disease Treatment and Symptoms

Almost everyone has heard of Lyme disease, an illness caused by being bitten by an infected tick. Lyme disease treatments exist if the disease is caught in time. But, many people aren’t aware that symptoms often mimic other illnesses and don’t appear at the same time. To complicate symptom recognition further, many people don’t even know a tick has bitten them.

At Serenity Health Care, we can diagnose Lyme disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the upper Midwest region is a prime location for Lyme disease. Lyme disease treatment is possible, but early diagnosis is vital to helping prevent serious health problems.

Take precautions in wooded areas where ticks are common. Light colored clothing can help you spot ticks. Inspect your skin when you come indoors. If you develop a rash or flu-like symptoms after being in a suspect area, schedule an appointment for a diagnosis. Keep a watch for these symptoms so you’ll know when to ask about Lyme disease treatment:

  • A skin rash that looks like a bull’s eye is one of the most common symptoms, but this rash is not present on everyone.
  • Muscle aches, fever and headaches (flu-like symptoms) can appear in the first 30 days after being bitten by a tick.
  • Some people develop more advanced symptoms such as joint pain, dizziness and heart rate changes.

Lyme disease has the potential to progress to serious health problems. That’s why we’ve recently introduced Personalized Bio Terrain therapy for chronically ill Lyme disease patients. This natural and safe treatment is appropriate for all ages, and improvements appear gradually over a three-month timeframe. It’s one of the most effective Lyme disease treatments.

Although advanced Lyme disease can take longer to treat, most people recover. Research has shown Bio Terrain therapy to be effective in improving the rate of recovery from Lyme disease.

Diagnosis of Lyme disease isn’t something you want to postpone. It’s important to act now for Lyme disease treatment. When something does feel right about your health, schedule an appointment with Serenity Health Care.

We’ll find the right path of healing, so you can get back to enjoying your life. Get in touch.
